More harassment of journalists in the Czech RepublicIrena Válová, Chairperson of the Czech Media Observatory, a three-year project of the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights, financed by the European Commission, was called for questioning by Czech Criminal Police Department for Prague 10 on 3rd June, 2003, in connection with a criminal complaint lodged against her on 28th April, 2003 by Prague lawyer Radek Pokorný.

The complaint argues that Válová is under suspicion of having committed five criminal offences by campaigning against a Czech newspaper distribution monopoly. Czech newspapers are distributed by a monopoly company, jointly owned by six newspaper publishers. This, argues Válová, is an obstacle to the diversity of the press, because among other things it prevents a newcomer from entering the Czech print media market. The five criminal offences that Válová is accused of are: infringing the secrecy of personal communication, defamation, spreading alarmist news, damaging other people's rights, and damaging and abusing recordings of information. Válová is supposed to have committed these offences primarily by reading a report about the dangers of press distribution monopoly to the Czech Parliament and by publishing articles about the matter. On advice from her laywer, Válová refused to answer any questions to the police.
