And Edison invented the light bulb...
27. 7. 2010 / Petr Wagner
In this so-called "silly season" (that's how journalists call the summer time, when there is not as many serious news, when politicians and the population are on holidays, so lots of frivolities are published to fill up the gap) a discussion emerged about the idea from the new people at the Health Ministry of charging people for the care they get when the damage was caused by themselves (like in suicide attempts). As it is usual among us, this was done without any analysis of how much money we would really save with this measure and whether it makes sense at all to even consider it. So the discussion goes on about who should or should not pay. Obese people, smokers, motorcycle riders, mountain climbers, skiers, drivers, cyclists, swimmers...
The level of the discussion and as a consequence the level of knowledge of health issues by the politicians that took over the resort is really "interesting". Especially the center right Civic Democrats (ODS) expert Mr Šťastný is rather afield and he probably doesn't even know what he pays in compulsory insurance as a driver... (Novinky.cz reports how he said that those who provoke car accidents should pay themselves for the damages -- just that this is already the norm).
So let someone who is not paid to advise our politicians offer some expert contribution. The health insurance system even today has not problem in recovering the money spent in cases where the person was culpable for the accident. All car owners have to pay the mandatory insurance. So I would advise the politicians in power to read the rules and conditions that cover that type of insurance. They would find out that there can be found a clause that relates to health damages caused by the driver to others. It reaches up to some millions of Czech crowns.
So, dear members of the new government and acolytes or even journalists: the light bulb was invented by Edison, America was discovered by Columbus and... if you have not much to say, but you feel the need to be seen in the media, what about trying to mumble instead?
