ČSSD: You Can't Just Passively Wait

22. 7. 2010 / Boris Cvek

Stanislav Křeek's article Hopeless government (http://czechfocus.cz/2010/7/20/art53560.html) clearly shows, in my opinion, why social democracy is, according to current opinion polls, losing against TOP 09, which could be the winner of the elections, were they today. But the Social Democratic party is just passivelly waiting for the center right government coalition to get people to poverty, making them mad -- then they start voting for the Left...

Křeček even brings up Nikolas Sarkozy's pronouncement, which reflects the deep distrust by the French elite towards the anglo-saxon way of perceiving the market. Perhaps Křeček could find more inspiration in the budget cuts and administration savings being done by the socialist Spanish premier Zapatero. Or, on the contratry, to look for positive people-oriented political models within the current right wing Hungarian coalition, which wants, after the tough lessons from the previous socialist government, actually spend more.

Of course the question is how creatively and effectivelly social democracy in the Czech lands wants to change for the better the way our society works. And whether they have, for that, some vision (and people) to offer. It is obvious that there will be plenty of opportunities during the new administration to bring up the discussion of alternatives to Petr Nečas` government's decisions. However, to simply wait for people's reaction against the Right's tough measures may not be enough.

After Paroubek's "no fee, no radar" populism, passivity would be a step back. For ČSSD's current elite, it is now a matter of basic responsibility: to make the Czech Left a real active entity, intelligent, inventive and innovative. But I can't imagine those graying elderly men under the word "innovative".
