Paroubek Screwed Up, So Kick Him...
7. 6. 2010 / Michael Kroh
Immediately after the end of the elections a bunch of "generals after the battle" emerged with their critical analysis of the Social Democrats' campaign and the behavior of its leader. And exception was the commentary written by Luděk Toman, who blames the right wing media for ČSSD's failure. Even Jiří Paroubek himself offers a similar view. The right wing media certainly inflated and exaggerated a lot of things, but could the mentioned commentator explain what they have lied about?
That Paroubek chose a bad strategy and acted inappropriately is something that even his followers admit. That the constant rise in the public finances` deficit would invariably lead to State bankruptcy was understood even by first-voters -- and that regardless of the right wing press (which, as the left wing media, is not read by many people these days, much less the young). The so-called right wing press did not write that the bankruptcy would happen immediately.
And finally, what about 2008, when the Social Democrats won a majority of the regional and senatorial elections was the press by any chance less right wing?
It is interesting that the vast majority of the criticism is aimed at Paroubek -- even by those who before the elections at least gave a blind eye to his more than evident weaknesses. Actually I don't know why those people remained silent at a time when they still could induce an internal rebellion against their leader as has happened with Mirek Topolánek.
Now they kick their exiting leader, just that he is practically a political cadaver, who was not even considered anymore for the humorous traditional award of "Big Shot" of the year. Unless Paroubek uses his autumn temporary residence in Teplice to candidate to the Senate and wins. Then he could show the so-called right wing, not friendly, press that they rather exaggerated with the criticism of his personality.
Left wing commentators and politologists would should now take advantage of the freedom of the press not only to balance out the right wing media propaganda, but especially to search and promote alternative solutions to the tasks that the center right government will have to fulfill (which even Social Democrats would not be able to run away from, if it had win). That way they can certainly help left wing politics much more than symbolically kicking the former ČSSD leader's corpse.
