I Got Old, Not Stupid

26. 4. 2010

Czech grandmothers are used to see their grandkids only when they need something, Dáša Vestrá writes in her open letter to all youngsters who are thinking about following the advice from teen movie stars Mádl and Issová and would like their grandparents to vote for right-wing, instead of leftist parties in the upcoming general elections.

Dear grandkids,

I am really glad, that you came to visit me again after 10 years. Back then you needed a baby carriage and your parents were not able to buy one, thus having to ask me. I see that you really grew up, you are almost a lady, ready to get married. But I only got older during all these years, I did not go gaga...

I am not yet that senile to not be able to decide by myself whom I will vote for. And because I am still able to think normally and to see what is going on, I will vote as I wish. I will vote for someone who will make sure that, when the prices go up, my retirement gains (even if a bit later) go up as well.

I will vote for those who can understand that old people get ill more often than young people, so those doctor visit fees come from what I have to buy my bread. I will vote for the political party that the woman who every 3 months wash my windows and clean my house, but doesn't want one crown for it, votes for, while saying that she may one day get paid back in the same token, once she will be old as well.

Dear girl, you only came visit me when you needed something. And that is what you have just done, once again. You came visit your old grandma only because of your own youngsters' movement. We used to go help our State plant potatoes, while you come try to convince older people to vote for those who will provide a better life... for you.

But I certainly will not vote as you wish. I will not give my vote to that political party that made you loose your whole day coming to get, once again, something from your grandmother.
