HISTORY AS A MATTER OF MONEY
Norwegians Want Our Čapek
5. 4. 2010
Štěpán Kortrba wants one of the most important Czech paintings to be saved from ending up in Norway. Does anyone care, he ponders...
One of the most pivotal pieces of Czech history, one of the most beautiful painting from Josefa Čapek -- Dívky na jahodách (Girls on strawberries). The Prague Castle tried unsuccessfully to lend that art piece for an exhibition that was to happen from the Autumn of 2009 until this January.
The former owner, Milan Friedl, did not trust the Eastern Bohemian Gallery and after his death, thanks to one of his sons, this painting from Čapek will end up in an auction at Prague's Galerie Art at the Hilton Hotel on April 11th.
Together with that Čapek piece there will also be sold even Lhoták`s Niké from 1949 and Muzik's painting Schodiště IX (Stairs IX). Norwegians would never allow, for example, that Edvarda Munch's Scream left Norway. Who will save Čapek for us? Is anyone interested at all in Josef Čapek?
