Where the Czech Roma come from?

15. 3. 2010

The majority of Czech Romanies were killed in the Holocaust. Many of them moved through two camps set up by Czechs (independent from the Germans). Czechs never took responsibility for the atrocities committed against Czech citizens of Roma and Sinti origin in their land. The vast majority of Roma who live in the Czech Republic today are descended from the Slovak Roma branch.

When the 3 million Sudeten Germans were displaced from Czech territory, there was a lack of manpower and Roma people were recruited to settle and work in the abandoned territories. This is still not a fact taught in Czech schools and textbooks.

There are close to 10 million Roma in Europe and near 500 thousand in the Czech Republic, but those numbers cannot be fully verified, because many Romany families tend to not be found by the Census polls or not answer correctly about their ethnicity.
