Should Muslims build a mosque in Brno?
8. 3. 2010 / Fabiano Golgo
Context: The two-thousand Muslim community in Brno would like to expand their space by building a second, larger mosque. But many in the area and in the political arena are fiercely opposed.
Question of the day: "What do you think about Muslims wanting to build a new mosque in Brno?"
Renata, 17, student, from Prague - "So what? We have so many churches, are we Catholics? They killed too, no?"
Marie Seidlová, 52, cook, from Prague - "We have Muslims in Czech Republic? Well, I think their problem is with Americans, not with us, but I am not sure we should have any new church or mosque or whatever like that here. The Austrians left a bunch of them, they are nice, but for what? I don't go, I don't anyone who goes. So why a mosque? But why not, if they want, I will not be the one who would go against it, let them have it."
Richard Hořejší, 38, salesman, from Ostrava, living in Prague - "big deal! I think it is even better if they have a mosque of their own, where we know the address to build in some microphones. Now they can meet in their apartments or in parks and we know nothing about what they may be planning. Not that I think they are all bad or that they are planning here in Czech Republic anything. Probably it is waste of time anyway. And the secret services are too busy listening to politician's sex lives. So why not, build a mosque!"
Jaroslav Vítek, 22, DJ, from Brno - "I don't know why all this fuss about whether Brno should allow or not for a new mosque to be built... Where are we? Is this Israel? What is the problem? All these churches and nobody cares. They are not Czech culture either. I am not afraid of Muslims. I am afraid of religion. Better no mosques and no churches, but if one yes, than the other too."
Tereza Stehlíková, 35, housewife, from Brno - "No mosque! We are not Muslim, our country is European, there should be no space for these Arabs among us. This way we will end up like Germany, full of Turks. If they don't have their church, they will not settle here. Why are they in Brno anyway? We have no God in Czech Republic, much less Allah or Mohamed. Or Mohamed is their Jesus, right?"
