Eurobarometer: Czech Republic belongs among the most bigotted countries in the EU

Only 12 per cent of Czechs (the lowest percentage in the EU) would be comfortable if their son or daughter had a relationship with a muslim. Only 16 per cent of Czechs (the lowest percentage in the EU) would be comfortable if their son or daughter had a relationship with a Roma person. Only 25 per cent of Czechs (the lowest percentage in the EU) would be comfortable if their son or daughter had a relationship with an Asian person. Only 27 per cent of Czechs (the lowest percentage in the EU) would be comfortable if their son or daughter had a relationship with a disabled person. 20 per cent of Czechs would be uncomfortable (the highest percentage in the EU) if their son or daughter had a relationship with a Christian.

Only 29 per cent of Czechs (the lowest percentage in the EU) would be comfortable if they had to cooperate at work with a Roma person. Only 27 per cent of Czechs (the lowest percentage in the EU) would be comfortable if they had to cooperate at work with a muslim.

Only 22 per cent of Czechs would be comfortable if they saw two men holding hands or kissing in public.

In the latest Eurobarometer statistics on intolerance in the European Union, the Czech Republic, surprisingly, ranks as one of the most bigotted European countries. The report has produced a flurry of soul-searching articles in the Prague intellectual and left-wing press.
