Czech Home Secretary: "We detain refugees because they could escape"

22. 10. 2015

"We continue to believe that it is necessary to detain the refugees because we are afraid that they might escape," said the Czech Home Secretary Milan Chovanec in response to the criticism of the conditions in the Czech detention centres by Czech ombudsman Anna Šabatová. In his view it is right and proper that the refugees should pay for their imprisonment and that they should be guarded by a private security agency staff. He added that the Czech Home Office will publish menus from the detention centres as well as videos and photographs taken within them. He said that the conditions in the detention centres are improving and that those European Ambassadors who want to visit them will be able to do so, as will be "some selected journalists". Some journalists, for instance a Reuters reporter, were not allowed to visit the detention centres.
